Beautifully written Steve. That Radio Times cover has me wondering if Chris Achilleos based his Target book cover designs on that Bellamy illustration. It always struck me that they were a quite a notable departure from his usual style. (There were also some Kirby swipes/homages that indicate he was being more playfully referential with his Who work)
I’m MORE ancient, sadly not discovering the Doctor (portrayed by Tom Baker!) until 1976 on my local New York PBS station. By the way, those who are interested can read a great interview with Mr. Baker in this week’s Radio Times!

Most of the ones with Chris’ covers were mid/late 70s, 76, 77 etc I think
