I do a podcast with a friend where we talk about obscure (at least to us) movies, and a "season" for each country. Moon Zero Two was the first one we did for the UK, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it at the top of today's post.
A bit of background on it: I'm Canadian, Sam's Australian (but living the US) and we both work in film. And while we tend to have pretty different views on, well, most things, we both do love old sci-fi and horror movies.
We also did an interview with Brian Trenchard-Smith (English/Australian director who now lives in Oregon) a couple of weeks back, and it turns out he cut the trailer for Moon Zero Two!
If anyone is interested in that, you can find it here:
They're all so fabulous. I'm full of nostalgia for time I never lived through! Microgramma however takes me back to being a child and helping my Dad with his film-making, choosing fonts from his Letraset books, picking up the sheets from Jessops and helping typeset them on clear plastic or cardboard, getting the lighting right. Good times!
I really loved that Playboy cover you did back in 2012. It was so new and different than anything previous, though historically, Arthur Paul had art directed some amazingly clever and stylish covers in his time too, of course. Did you work on any others for them?
Sadly not; it was a bold move at the time by a new art director who left not that long after. They went back to being a little traditional again after that - nowt wrong with that of course, I was a flash in the pan! The model is a full-time professional gamer now - she followed her fabulously nerdy real interests and I love that that was her trajectory.
That is a cool progression! I saw an issue on the newsstand when I first moved to the USA, and they’d done away with a lot of the nudity, it actually seemed pretty stylish, but I think the sales bombed, so they went back to their old ways. It still sunk into oblivion eventually. I believe they’re just online now.
Some great design on show there! Surely the 60’s & 70’s the golden age of cinema posters. Nice little review of Moon Zero Two a film I yearned to see after seeing photos of those spacesuits (wasn’t Outland billed/trailed as western in space too?).
Another amazing set of posters. Thanks for running my Moon Zero Two 'review' again, and for the Portals & Black Goo plug. I'd forgotten Moon Zero Two was a Hammer film – although it's a kind of horror I suppose. Must watch it again!

!
I had no idea! Thanks for that. Cool cover!
Microgramma Forever. Huge shout for RResmini King of the Starkweather for this heads up.
Thanks for sharing those posters Steve. I need to watch Moon Zero Two as soon as possible!!!!!!!
Ha! at your own risk! :)
It has some charm, but it doesn't exactly come together well.

I do believe you're right about that. Steranko did the highly praised graphic novel too.
Love that Rain People one, never seen that before, the first Moon Zero Two poster is great
Yeah, I just had to hang that Rain People poster. They don't risk this sort of design these days, do they.

Well, thanks for the review, and good luck with the Goo. I'm a poet, and I didn't know it!
